The CW’s Powerpuff Girls pilot has found three actresses to play the heroines made of sugar, spice, and everything nice. According to Variety, Chloe Bennet will play Blossom, Dove Cameron will play Bubbles and Yana Perrault will assume the role of Buttercup. Two of these lead actresses have plenty of experience starring in superhero shows already.
Chloe Bennet played Daisy Johnson AKA Quake for seven seasons of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (pictured above). Although she started off as a rebellious hacker, she learned how to build and lead a team. This makes Bennett a natural choice to play Blossom, the de facto leader of the Powerpuff Girls.
Casting Dove Cameron as her sister Bubbles is hilariously ironic here: When Cameron appeared on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, she was a vicious villain who would have loved to tear Quake apart. Bubbles, on the other hand, is known for her sweetness and kindness. Cameron will probably draw from her villainous S.H.I.E.L.D experience as well as her Disney background (in Liv and Maddie) to give the audience a sweet character with some hidden fire.
Balancing out the trio will be Yana Perrault playing the traditionally tough Buttercup. Although the actress hasn’t officially appeared onscreen in a television role before, she’s been a part of several Broadway Productions. According to early plot descriptions, Perrault’s Buttercup, Benett’s Blosso,m and Cameron’s Bubbles have all retired from the crime-fighting life and must decide whether to come back together as a team to help save the world.
The CW has plenty of experience bringing layers and drama to superhero and nostalgic properties. But that still leaves the question of whether the show will be more of a heavy and over-the-top drama like Riverdale, or a more nuanced exploration of feminism and heroics like Supergirl. And will they cast an actual ape to portray Mojo Jojo? Hopefully, we’ll get answers about how Townsville and The Powerpuff Girls will come to life in the upcoming months.
